After returning to Washington from Connecticut on the same day, Trump said that the US-Iran negotiation process can be fast or slow, and he hopes that Iraqi leaders will promote a mutually beneficial agreement. "If a war can be avoided by waiting a few more days, I think this is extremely meaningful." He clearly reiterated that before Iran formally signs the agreement, the United States will not grant any sanctions relief and will never allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons.
The day before (19th), Trump posted on social media that at the request of the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, he had suspended the military strike against Iran that day. The leaders of the three countries told the United States that the current US Iran negotiations are expected to reach an agreement acceptable to the United States, the Middle East and other countries in the world, which will explicitly prohibit Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
According to the US cable news network (CNN) on May 20, citing US officials, Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have had many phone calls in recent days, and there are obvious differences between the two sides on the course of action against Iraq. When the two sides spoke on the 17th, Trump told Netanyahu that he might launch a new targeted strike against Iran early this week; about 24 hours later, Trump announced a suspension of the strike plan.
The official also revealed that Trump and Netanyahu on the 19th of the call was tense. Netanyahu advocated a tougher stance against Iran, believing that postponing a military strike would only benefit Iran, and directly informed Trump that postponing the strike was a wrong decision and should act as planned. Both US and Israeli sources said that Trump is inclined to reach an agreement between the United States and Iran, while Netanyahu is looking forward to tougher military action, and the positions of the two sides are significantly different.
